Jonathan to race in British F3 with Litespeed

Litespeed F3 team have linked up with Jonathan Legris for mext weekends F3 race at Brands Hatch to help develop the new exciting Litespeed car. The car, which has only raced in Britain once this year will hopefully see the youngster add to his already very creditable results this season on the Spanish F3 Championship.

"This is a great opportunity for myself, and i have to thank Team West-tec for organising this chance for me and Litespeed for having the faith in me to develop this car. Legris Amazes once again

Albacete in 40 degree heat was the scene of rounds 5 and 6 which Jonathan and Team West-tec knew a result similar to that in Spa was an impossible task and from the first test on Friday it was evident just how far off the pace the 2000 car is around albacete compared to the newer 2006 and 2008 cars. Not helped by a visit to the hospital after an accident the day before, the 20 year old struggled to get the set-up on what was a very hot and dusty circuit.

Qualifying went all the wrong way, with a much more driveable car after extensive changes, the first part was to place a time and check the set-up but , coming into the pits at the last second, Jonathan was called into the weigh bridge where the car would not start losing valuable time. When the car finally started, their was no time on the clock for Jonathan to put on his second set of new tyres so opted to finish the qualifying session on the same set. 17th was the result, but knowing that he can race and the times were not too far off, a sense of optimism was in the team.

With a mediocre start in race 1, Jonathan got passed by the faster starting 2008 cars but with a strong driving performance on the opening 2 laps, he soon found himself in 11th, right behind team mate, Christian Ebbesvik, now in the new 2008 car. A car falling off ahead promoted him up to 10th where he would stay, hassling his team mate into mistakes and defensive moves throughout. Race 2 though was a totally different story, with a good start, and once again a few storming overtaking manouvres on the first lap, Jonathan jumped straight into 6th. After having early on lap 1 overtaken race 1 winner Sanchez, Jonathan withstood all the pressure put on him while still keeping in close contact with the cars ahead. All the fun though came at the end, with 2 laps to go, the cars infront started battling allowing Jonathan and the pursuing cars behind a chance to gain another place. Jonathan unfortunately was the slowest in the group but with good tactics, he made a stunning move around the outside at the fast 3rd to last corner moving up to 5th on the last lap, only 2 tenths from 4th. This also gave him his 6th trophy of the year, with a 3rd in class after his 4th in race 1. "No one expected a top 5, especially qualifying 17th and the odds were stacked heavily against us, but we did damage limitation to our championships and thats what we aimed for this weekend and we got a bit more". "It was also a hard weekend for the team with alot of changes beforehand so i must thank them for their job" Jonathan now drops back from second in the standings to 4th overall in an 8 year old car, only 7 points behind going into the fast and unknown Valencia Street circuit in 4 weeks time.


 

"Albacete will be a struggle"

Jonathan Legris, who currently lays 2nd in the Spanish F3 Championship in an 8 year old car says that Albacete, Spain, this coming weekend will be the biggest challenge this year. The configuration of the Spanish circuit means the highly aero advance 2008 and 2006 cars should be a dominant force on the circuit which demands high entry speeds. Jonathan, who runs the only 2000 car on the grid this weekend has currently out performed the expectations of himself, his team (Team West-tec) and has recieved high praises from numerous figures in the sport for his consistent racing. With 2 overall podiums and 2 B Class wins at the previous race, Jonathan has already racked up 5 trophies from 4 races but he does not expect to increase that number at Albacete. " At Spa, we were competing against the best in the championship, so to race them means to race fair and hard. This is what you expect at the front end of F3 but mid-pack it is hard to understand the people you race as their cars may be as fast but their driving styles erratic" Jonathan is aiming for a top 10 finish, as he aimed for and managed to achieve in Jarama, with an 8th and running as high as 6th before contact from behind. The circuit is fairly new to Jonathan after a 1 day test had to be cut short after only 30 completed laps earlier in the year compared to the others 2/3 days pre-season test at the circuit. "We have to hope for luck to come my way, it will be a hot race, so i hope for mistakes from others and none from myself to capitalise"


Stunning at Spa

Spa-Francorchamps brings two class wins, two overall second places and a lap record!

Jonathan had a remarkable weekend at Spa, at a race circuit that suited the car aswell as the incredible driving style of the youngster. In testing on the first day, it was relevant that the 2008 cars had made a massive step forward in performance as Jonathan found himself ending the day as only 7th overall. Still a feat that in a 2000 car was well noticed. But it was in qualifying where Jonathan knew that getting into the top 5 would be crucial. The circuit however was slightly damp, and unable to work his car as hard as the aero advanced 2006 and 2008 cars, he wound up 5th, still a great achievement for the age of the car.

The first race was to take place only a few hours later, with dry conditions but overcast skies seemed to threaten as the cars lined up on the grid. With the circuit being dry as they left the grid, Jonathan made a reasonable start but got boxed into the first corner by a fast starting 6th place. This set Jonathan back as he had to follow the car for an entire lap before being able to overtake. With that done, he slowly picked off the other competitors and hunted down the leader, setting the lap record on the way, and was attacking just before the clouds started to give. Once again, with the less aero efficient car, Jonathan did well to keep 3rd placed Will Bratt behind and still managed to finish 7 tenths off the race winner to claim his first B Class win and second in the overall race. Race 2 sees the top 6 from the first race reversed so Jonathan once again started 5th. A great start meant he held 5th but it was clear that the 2008 cars had learnt from the previous race and made it very difficult for Jonathan. With the race being much warmer, it was almost as much a race of attrition as the lack of air caused extreme heat inside the car. Battling hard, he managed to very slowly bring himself into play and on the final lap looked to almost be in position to attack for the win. It was not to be however but this race was much more satisfying for the driver as he clearly had a slower car but without mistakes and fast speed the entire race just fell in place. The next race is at Albacete, Spain where he will be at a disadvantage to the newer cars but it does not mean he cannot punch a hole in the main championship as he now lies second overall.

 


Podium on Spanish F3 bow

Jonathan had a very mixed weekend, with incredible pace showing in testing, Qualifying went all wrong with his fastest lap blocked by another driver. This left Jonathan down in 15th position, behind his two team mates, even though greater pace was evident as he had shown top ten running pace during the testing sessions even though he was new to the circuit. In the race though, he made some great manouevers to climb to 8th for the chequered flag, passing his two team mates along the way. This also gave Jonathan a class podium even though he is in an 2000 car against the 2006/2007 cars in his class. "Qualifying was such a shame, as we knew that getting in the top ten would have been a great achievement, but i managed to do so in the race which showed i was able to race and pass the people i will be competing with all year"

Race two though was to be started on eighth, as you start where you finish in race one, and a quick getaway saw him straight into 7th before a safety car on the same lap. He was soon promoted to 6th as Gachnang picked up a puncture due to the debris strewn across circuit at nearly every corner. On the restart, Jonathan made a move on race 1 winner, Alguesauri who duely slammed the door on him, taking off half of the front wing. It was there on a matter of Keeping it on the circuit. With a fantastic job done at changing his driving style to lap at the same times as in the first race, he stayed with the front runners until his team mate, Christian Ebbesvik out braked himself in the first corner, collecting Jonathan. Unfortunate for the team, but a ver positive weekend for Jonathan, as he can build on this for the remainder of the season and the performance put in at Jarama will not go un noticed.

Great speed shown at Spa

Jonathan's testing continued with another strong showing at Spa Francorchamps, Belgium. The youngster put in a faultless performance on the one day test to learn the circuit but also marked out what can be a brilliant year as he toppled the newer cars. Jonathans next venture is out to Jerez, Spain, for two days before the first race of the season at Jarama on the bank holiday weekend 3rd/4th May.


Great first test

Jonathan started his first test at Albacete, with great promise for the season, even though his testing mileage was cut very premature due to a small problem with the engine. A minor off caught an oil pipe wrong on the engine and forced Jonathan out of the days testing after only completing 45 laps. He did however prove the speed that he had shown at Valencia was no fluke as he matched the times of the midfield A Class cars on a circuit unknown before the test. Spa is the next scheduled test, a month away, and will see Jonathan learn another circuit which host the second round of the Spanish F3 Championship.


Spanish F3 testing starts

Jonathan will make his first official Spanish F3 test debut at Albacete in Spain on the 26th, 27th of March. The test will be one of only a few pre-season tests Jonathan can take part in due to budget but as the circuits will all be new, any testing will be extremely valuable. " Soon i will be comfortable in the car, so it will be a matter of learning the circuits which i hope will only take one day to be full up to pace. Its a challenge im confident with" Jonathan will also visit, Spa, Magny Cours and Jerez before the first race of the Season at Jarama.


Legris to race in Spanish F3

Jonathan will take the next step of his career into the main European continent by racing in the Spanish F3 COPA Championship with Team West-Tec. The championship will see Jonathan visit some of the greatest F1 circuits around, including Spa, Magny Cours and Barcelona. The championship also entails a support race for the European F1 Grand Prix at Valencia which will be a great prospect under so many powerful eyes in motor racing. " This will be all new for myself, but the team are well prepared and extremely focused on the job in-hand as they proved by winning last years COPA championship. Legris test F3 for Team West-Tec

Jonathan Recently test an F301 Dallara at Valencia, Spain, a circuit that has faired him so well in the past. This time was no different, for Jonathan was the Fastest in class and 4th overall to cars from the British and Spanish top classes. This was a great performance as the test underwent very slippery conditionsa as well as wet and dry which showed jonathans pace in all the conditions and how incredibly comfortable he felt within the car. Jonathan is looking for sponsorship to progress into F3 in 2008.


Fantastic Valencia World Final races for Legris

Jonathan Legris showed his racing promise as he raised his game to be the first British driver to cross the line in fifth, after the German cars of the top 4 proved to be unstoppable. From what was an extremely close qualifying, Jonathan lined up 7th, but with two qualifying groups, this would leave him as only 16th fastest overall. The karting style format though saw Legris start 8th, 7th and 7th in his 3 heats, each of which he finished 4th. This outlined his incredible racing abilities once again and gave him a great 4th place grid slot for the World Final race.

With a great get away, the front 5 escaped the mele which was to become a great battle behind. Jonathan soon found himself in 3rd position and held that for 10 laps until the might the German cars he had earlier outpaced came into their own. He did not give up easily though, which saw the drivers behind catch and he then had to defend his 5th position. He did so and eventually finished clear of 6th. The out come of the event though was held till late in the evening as a part number was missing from the skid block of Legris' car. Second place of Josef Kral also suffered the same fate of exclusion but both can hold their heads high, as the missing part number cannot improve performance and thier on track prowess is not in question.


FPA Sootout brings bad luck for Legris

Jonathan had his sights on winning the FPA Shootout which was held at Snetterton on the first weekend of the month. He went in a favourite to win as he had shown great pace in the previous race at Brands hatch the weekend before. This was not to be though as a very trying weekend saw Jonathan once again show his speed but also his bad fortune suffering from two cut tyres which needed replacing in qualifying and also two punctures in the race to end what was a great opportunity. Jonathan looks forward to being in Valencia in three weeks time, in a FBMW for the last time at the World final where the winner will recieve a massively attractive prize of a test in a BMW F1 car.


FPA Brings another podium and 3 fastest laps

A new car in the form of a Formula Palmer Audi dawned a new challenge on Jonathan Legris which saw a great first test day at Brands Hatch where the racing would commence on the weekend. Qualifying made strange results, with a solid 3rd in the first, the second caugo compromised the third but a strong 5th left him in a good position foht out the youngster which had a result of only ninth but after only 4 laps in total. This alsr a podium.

A poor start in the first race ruined the good qualifying form, but saw Jonathan drive his way back through to 6th. Starting 9th in the second, Jonathan made a good start and hunted down the front runners to finish within a second of 2nd place. The third though saw the best result of the weekend, with another clean start, Jonathan posted yet another fastest lap and only half a second behind the winner, and this years FPA champion, to finish a great second on the tough Kent circuit.

The next race is at Snetterton which forms a shootout for the final place in the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award.

Another Second at Knockhill

Rounding off the Formula BMW UK season at Knockhill saw Jonathan take another solid podium in the first encounter and a 7th in the second to end the season 6th in the championship table. After showing very strong testing times, Jonathan and the Motaworld racing team had an unfortunate qualifying, leaving the youngster down in 6th and 8th respectively. In the first race though, Jonathan showed the pace he had in testing and drove through the mayhem packed damp race to notch up another podium finish in second.
The second race saw an early challenge for 6th left him in the wrong position, leaving him down in 9th. He did however climb back to seventh in the final race of the year and also the final Formula BMW race to be held in the UK. Jonathan duly said, “this year has been very up and down but has also seen some great results so to round it off with another podium is great.”

Back to Brands

A happy return to Brands Hatch saw an unfortunate qualifying with tenth in the first qualifying and fourth in the second. However having started back in tenth, Jonathan had a good start and completed the race in fourth place with the leaders in sight. For the second race Jonathan had another good start and saw an early opportunity for third before contact with another driver dropped him into seventh and finally finished in sixth.

The next event is at Knockhill on the 1st and 2nd September 2007.

Legris wins at Donington

Jonathan Legris proved that patience is certainly a virtue after 'raining' supreme in a heavily delayed first Formula BMW UK race of the day at Donington Park. With treacherous weather forcing the officials to twice delay the start of the race, clearer skies but a wet circuit greeted the drivers as they came onto the grid, but with little or no experience of such conditions, the first few laps were certainly tentative.

Nonetheless, Legris showed his experience from the getaway, the Motaworld Racing driver getting a superb start from fourth to round the first corner in second place and snatching the lead half way round the opening lap.

From here, Legris simply pulled away to cross the line a clear five seconds up on Marcus Ericsson and Henry Arundel to claim victory.
